Gil Thorp Turns 65 years old!

Back in 1958, Jack Berrill debuted his sports comic strip in the Midwest rag circuit. The Chicago Tribune, to be exact. This daily comic resonated with teens and adults alike because Gil Thorp dealt with issues that a comic strip didn’t go near, like racism, body shaming, religious intolerance, homosexuality, drug usage, and teen pregnancy.
Sadly, those are all issues that continue to upset a majority of the strip’s readers today.
But I do my best to honor Berril’s memory by pushing the envelope and writing a comic strip that speaks to adults and today’s youth.
Jack and the strip deserves no less than that.
Here’s to you, Gil.
FYI: Check out the Chicago Tribune’s feature back in June.
My next signing is tomorrow!
I’ll be at Arsenal Comics & Games Newbury Park from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 9th. I have a unique relationship with the Ventura area because an excellent teacher incorporates La Voz De M.A.Y.O. in his college class, so many folks have cared enough to keep up with my work.
I will continue to milk the proverbial TMNT tit until it runs dry, so don’t be surprised to find me signing this same issue over the next six months or longer.
You have been warned.
L.A. Libros Festival
I will be at the Los Angeles Libros Festival on Saturday, September 30th! I accidentally double-booked myself and had to back out of CXC, but I’m honored to showcase my work and do my first bilingual panel. My panel will be in person from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the Central Library! I’m so freaking honored and excited you have no idea!

Tucson Comic-Con Photo Gallery
As you might have gathered from my last update, Tucson Con means a lot to me. It’s an honor to keep coming back to my hometown as a guest and to have the support of my friends and family. I enjoy taking photos of guests that come to show; specifically, comic book pros. I’ve always fancied myself as a comic book historian regarding its history in Tucson. There was a point in time where anything that had anything to do with comics, I was there. I can’t be bothered these days unless I’m getting paid to show up. If I went to comic book events when I’m not at cons, I wouldn’t have a life—and I’m doing my best to have one of those.
Here’s a gallery of some pros behind their tables, slinging their art and stories. Shot Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II!
