I’m rarely prepared to write something that I didn’t create.
But the Ninja Turtles have been in my life before I could retain thoughts. My first birthday was a Ninja Turtles-themed party with a Raphael cake and piñta. I slept in those classic 1990s step-and-repeat TMNT twin bed sheets. My sister and I jamed to the TMNT (1990) cassette soundtrack that had the main theme, Turtle Power rap single, and the audio of Master Splinter explaining his and the Turtle’s origins.
Classic.
When my buddy Jonathan passed my name along to write the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Splintered Fate digital comic for the new Apple Arcade game, let’s say that I was more than ready. I have been playing a beta version of the game—and it freaking rules. Hit me up if you download the game and want to double-team Shredder.
I had a blast writing this comic. With the help of the TMNT game writer, Kevin Michael Johnson, our story starts right before you spring into action. The digital-first issue is available through Amazon Kindle a.k.a. Comixology only for $1.99. Shout out to my editors Thea Cheuk and Charles Beacham for guiding me through the whole process.
Here is a four-page preview exclusive to my Substack, I think.
I hope you dig it. I was that kid that would read the comics for video games. The one that sticks out for me is the Batman Dark Tomorrow Xbox game by Kemco. There was a mini-comic in the case, and I remember Killer Croc calling Batman an idiot for keeping him alive. It was a terrible game. But the cut scenes were awesome because the game featured all of the rogues’ gallery and Batman’s allies like Oracle. I’m a sucker for that stuff.
Anyway, I hope you go to your local comic shop and enjoy my favorite holiday: Free Comic Book Day. I don’t know if I should be offended no one asked me to table at their store. It’s nice to be asked, you know? I would’ve said no, but it would’ve been nice to be asked to the dance. You know what? I’ve earned a year off!
I love FCBD because it promotes literacy for everyone. I can’t think of a better excuse to get you back in your local shop browsing all the new ideas sitting pretty on the spinner racks every single week. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s what Hugh Jackman has to say about FCBD, bub.
OMG WHAT?! I gotta pick up this book! Congrats Henry!
Congratulations and cowabungas, dude! You nailed the turtle tone.
I had, like, all the same TMNT experiences as you. And in terms of video game comics, I read Valiant’s Nintendo Comic System religiously. Super Mario, Game Boy, Captain N, all of them. Two years ago I got a nice treasury edition.
